Sometimes reading can start to feel like work—especially for young children who are still finding their confidence as readers. But reading doesn’t have to come with pressure,
timers, or expectations.
That’s why I love using Reading Bingo as a gentle, playful way to invite kids into stories.
Instead of focusing on how much or how well a child reads, Reading Bingo focuses on how reading feels — fun, cozy, silly, connected, and safe.
What Is Reading Bingo?
Reading Bingo is a simple activity where children complete reading-related challenges across a bingo grid. Each square invites them to experience reading in a different way, such as:
Reading under a tree
Reading with a snack
Reading in pajamas
Reading something silly
Reading with a friend or family member
There’s no required order and no “right” way to play. Children can choose the squares that excite them most and move at their own pace.
Why Reading Bingo Works
1. It Builds Confidence Without Pressure
When children get to choose how they read, they feel more in control. That sense of choice builds confidence and reduces anxiety around reading.
2. It Encourages Connection
Many squares invite shared reading moments—with family members, friends, or even a favorite stuffed animal. These small moments create positive reading memories that last.
3. It Makes Reading Feel Fun Again
Reading Bingo adds novelty and play to literacy. Whisper voices, flashlights, snacks, and
silly choices remind children that reading can be joyful—not just instructional.
4. It Supports Emotional Growth
Several prompts encourage kindness, bravery, and reflection. Stories become tools for empathy, emotional awareness, and meaningful conversations.
How to Use Reading Bingo at Home
Print the Bingo board and keep it somewhere visible
Let your child choose which square to try each day
Celebrate effort, not completion
Praise the experience (“I love how cozy that looked!”) instead of outcomes
You don’t even need to finish the board for it to be a success.
How Teachers Can Use Reading Bingo in the Classroom
Reading Bingo works beautifully in classrooms, libraries, and literacy centers.
Teachers can:
Use it as a monthly reading challenge
Offer it as independent choice time
Send it home for family literacy engagement
Allow students to complete squares in any order
It’s flexible, inclusive, and works well for different reading levels.

Making Reading a Positive Experience
When children associate reading with comfort, creativity, and connection, they’re more likely to return to books on their own.
That’s the heart of Reading Bingo.
It’s not about checking boxes—it’s about creating moments where children feel proud, relaxed, and excited to open a book.
