Read Across America Activities That Build Readers, Kindness, and Family Connection

These flexible Read Across America activities allow teachers and families to create literacy experiences that fit their unique classroom and home environments.

Small acts of kindness can make reading time even more meaningful.
Small acts of kindness can make reading time even more meaningful.

Each year, Read Across America invites schools, families, and communities to pause and celebrate something truly powerful: the joy of reading. Held this year from March 2–6, this nationwide initiative shines a spotlight on literacy while reminding us that stories do more than teach children how to read—they help shape who they become.

This year’s theme, Challenge Kindness, is a beautiful reminder that books can spark empathy, meaningful conversations, and small acts that make a big difference.

Why Read Across America Matters

Read Across America isn’t just a themed week—it’s a chance to refocus on reading in a way that feels joyful, intentional, and connected.

📖 It Strengthens Reading Habits

Setting aside dedicated time for reading—whether in classrooms or at home—helps children:

  • Build focus and stamina

  • Develop positive associations with books

  • See reading as something to look forward to, not rush through

When reading becomes a shared celebration, children are more likely to carry those habits forward.

❤️ It Builds Empathy Through Stories

Books naturally invite children to step into someone else’s shoes. Stories about friendship, courage, kindness, and perseverance help children:

  • Recognize emotions in themselves and others

  • Practice compassion

  • Understand that kindness can look different in different situations

The Challenge Kindness theme encourages children not just to talk about kindness—but to notice it, practice it, and reflect on it.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 It Brings Families Together

Read Across America extends beyond the classroom. Family reading time:

  • Creates shared memories

  • Opens the door for meaningful conversations

  • Helps parents model a love of reading

Even ten minutes of reading together can become a calming, connecting moment in a busy day.

Children’s Books About Kindness for Read Across America Week

To support teachers and families, I’ve curated a small collection of books that pair beautifully with kindness-focused discussions and activities. Educators and parents can choose what works best for their students and children.

The Lion and the Mouse (Caldecott Medal Winner)

Calvin the Christmas Tree: The Greatest Christmas Tree of All.

I Don't Want to Move: A Surprising Journey of Friendship and Adventure

Luna the Little Witch - The True Colors of Friendship

Great themes to look for:

  • Kindness and empathy

  • Friendship and inclusion

  • Courage and resilience

  • Helping others and teamwork

These Read Across America activities make it easy to reinforce literacy and kindness in meaningful, engaging ways.

  • Random Acts of Kindness Challenge

  • Kindness Crown Craft (perfect for preschool & kindergarten)

  • Kindness Bookmarks

  • Daily Reading Tracker

  • Reinforce reading skills

  • Encourage thoughtful discussion

  • Fit naturally into existing routines

Teachers can choose one activity—or several—without feeling overwhelmed.

Flexible Read Across America Activities for Teachers and Families

One of the most important parts of Read Across America is flexibility. Every classroom and family is different. By offering resources in one organized folder, educators and parents can:

  • Select what fits their time and age group

  • Use activities independently or as a unit

  • Adapt ideas for small groups, whole class, or home use

This approach keeps the focus where it belongs—on meaningful reading experiences.

The Lasting Impact of Read Across America Week

Read Across America activities reminds us that reading isn’t just an academic skill—it’s a bridge to connection, understanding, and kindness. When children read stories that challenge them to care, reflect, and grow, those lessons last far beyond one week in March.

📚 Because when we read together, we grow together.
