February often brings a natural focus on kindness, caring, and connection. While hearts and Valentine’s Day take center stage, it’s also a meaningful time to continue building social-emotional learning (SEL) skills in ways that feel natural and doable for young children.

The good news? SEL doesn’t need to be complicated.

Small, everyday acts of kindness can help children practice empathy, responsibility, and connection—skills that last far beyond the winter months.

Why February Is a Great Time for SEL

By February, children are settled into routines—but winter can feel long. This is often when kids benefit most from gentle reminders about kindness, cooperation, and helping others.

Focusing on SEL in February helps children:

  • Strengthen empathy and perspective-taking

  • Build classroom and family community

  • Practice kindness in real, age-appropriate ways

  • Feel capable of making a positive difference

These moments don’t need lessons or lectures—just opportunities.

Easy SEL Activities Kids Can Do Every Day

One of the simplest ways to support SEL is through small, intentional actions that children can understand and repeat.

Some favorite kindness ideas include:

  • Helping a neighbor or family member

  • Writing a kind note or thank-you card

  • Letting someone go ahead of them

  • Giving a compliment or a smile

  • Helping with a chore at home or school

Help Kids Reflect on Kindness

Ask children one simple question after completing a kindness activity:

  • How did your kindness help someone today?

  • How did it make you feel?

Young children don’t need long answers. Noticing and listening are what help build emotional awareness.

When kids see that kindness can be simple, they’re more likely to practice it on their own.

A Winter Kindness Challenge for Kids

To make this even easier, I created a 24 Days of Winter Kindness printable that families and teachers can use throughout February (and all winter long).

This printable:

  • Encourages everyday acts of kindness

  • Supports empathy and emotional growth

  • Requires no prep

  • Works at home, in classrooms, or for morning meetings

You don’t need to complete every day—choose what works best for your children and routines.

Teacher Tip: Make Kindness Visible

Choose one kindness activity to focus on each week rather than completing all 24.Post the printable where students can see it, and take a moment at the end of the day to ask:“How did today’s act of kindness help our classroom feel?”

Keeping kindness visible helps children connect their actions to how others feel—an important social-emotional skill.

How to Use This SEL Activity

Here are a few simple ways to use the printable:

At Home

  • Pick one kindness activity per week

  • Talk about how it made someone feel

  • Let kids choose their favorite day

In the Classroom

  • Use during morning meeting

  • Choose a kindness goal for the week

  • Reflect together at the end of the day

For Younger Children

  • Read the activity aloud

  • Model the action together

  • Celebrate effort, not perfection

Different Ways to Use This Activity

  • Whole class: Choose one kindness goal for the week

  • Small groups: Talk or role-play what the kindness might look like

  • Individual: Invite children to notice and name kindness they see others doing

This flexibility allows the activity to fit a variety of classroom and home settings.

This activity supports key social-emotional learning skills, including empathy, cooperation, responsibility, and community awareness.

Keeping Kindness Going Beyond February

Kindness doesn’t end when winter does. The habits children build now—helping, noticing others, offering care—carry into spring and beyond.

SEL is about growth over time, and these small moments matter.
