Building Family Relationships One Book at a Time

Writer: Carolyn WatkinsCarolyn Watkins

Creating a love of reading in your child and fostering a special bond with them can be a fulfilling journey. Here are some additional thoughts on your tips:

  1. Start at Birth: Introducing books early not only helps with language development but also establishes a comforting routine that can signal relaxation and bedtime. The soothing sound of your voice can make a big difference.

  2. Scatter Books Throughout the House: Making books accessible in every room encourages spontaneous reading. Consider a variety of books, including picture books, touch-and-feel books, and interactive books.

  3. Set an Example: Children often mimic their parents' behaviors. Let them see you reading regularly, whether it's a novel, magazine, or even a recipe. Discuss what you're reading to spark their curiosity.

  4. Visit the Local Library: Libraries often have programs tailored to young children. Participating in these can provide a structured yet fun environment for your child to learn to love reading.

  5. Learn from Your Librarian: Librarians can recommend books that match your child’s interests and reading level, keeping them engaged and motivated.

  6. Put Time Limits on Screen Time: Encourage activities like drawing, puzzles, and outdoor play as alternatives to screen time. This balance helps children appreciate the quiet and imaginative nature of reading.

  7. Story Time is Non-Negotiable: Consistency is key. Make bedtime stories a cherished ritual. Let your child pick the book sometimes to give them a sense of ownership and excitement.

  8. Get a Library Card: The process of getting their own library card can be a big deal for a child, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride.

  9. Let Them Choose: Allowing your child to select their books respects their interests and preferences. If they’re excited about a particular series or genre, they’re more likely to stick with it.

  10. Encourage School Library Visits: Show enthusiasm for the books they bring home from school. Discussing these books can enhance comprehension and make reading a shared experience.

Reading together creates lasting memories and nurtures a lifelong love of books. Enjoy the journey!
